In the South of Ireland lies a pretty little town of Cobh which has been etched in annals of Irish history. Yes, we are talking about Cobh, the quaint little town famous for its colorful houses and the cathedral. Cobh being a port town has been of major significance for Ireland and it is the only place in Ireland that has a dedicated cruise terminal. This port town was the last port of call for RMS Titanic during its fateful journey across the Atlantic. During the great famine, millions of Irish emigrated to the United States in search of a better life from the Cobh harbor.

HOW TO REACH:

By Bus: It is just 30 mins from Cork city and is well-connected by public transport. Cobh Connect is the bus service that connects Cork & Cobh. The return ticket is 6 Euros per person. From Dublin, you can take a bus to Cork from the city center. 

By Train: Cobh is also well-connected by train from Cork by the commuter train and it takes 24 minutes to reach Cobh. The ticket prices are 5.50 Euros one way. From Dublin, you can take a train to Cork and change at Cork for the commuter train to Cobh.

By Car: You can drive to Cobh from Cork along the N8 and it is just 20 KMs from Cork.

TITANIC EXPERIENCE

Cobh was the last port of call for RMS Titanic before it started its fateful journey across the Atlantic towards New York. The Titanic Experience is located in the same building that used to house the White Star Line ticket office that sold tickets for RMS Titanic. The guided tour lasts for 30 minutes and during the tour, you would be able to view the original pier from where the passengers left for the Titanic. 

Ticket Price: 10 Euros per person

Opening Hours: 9 AM to 6 PM

The guided tour starts every 15 minutes.

  DECK OF CARDS

If you happen to do a Google search for Cobh you will definitely see an image of a row of colorful houses with a backdrop of a Cathedral. These beautifully painted colorful houses are known as the Deck of Cards. You can take an insta worthy picture from the park opposite the houses.

VISIT ST. COLMAN’S CATHEDRAL 

Also, known as Cobh Cathedral, the construction of the church started in 1868 and was completed in 1919. The carillon in this church happens to be one of the largest carillons in Europe with 49 bells. The Cathedral overlooks the Cobh bay.

SPIKE ISLAND

Spike Island tour has been one of the recent additions to Cobh tourism. A short ferry ride from Cobh leads you to Spike Island. The ferry leaves from Kennedy pier, Cobh. The island is famous for the star-shaped fort. The guided tour includes a visit to the punishment block, Ireland’s largest Artillery Gun park. To book tickets and timings, check this site.

Note: The ferries are not operational on Sundays during winter months.

FOTA WILDLIFE PARK & HOUSE 

Fota Wildlife Park is situated on Fota island and is 10 kms from Cobh. The park is set on 100 acres of land and is a great place to see many wild animals. Kangaroos, Cheetah, Peacocks, Giraffes, Rhinos you can see all of them here.
