Top Places to Visit in Alberobello, Italy

We absolutely fell in love with this storybook village located in the south of Italy. We saw it for the first time in the movie Bachna Ae Haseeno and were absolutely smitten by its beauty. So when we were planning our Italy road trip, we decided to include this beautiful town to our itinerary. It’s a small town dotted with Trullis especially the old town where you find Trullis of various shapes and sizes. Every nook here is picturesque.

We stayed at one of the Trulli which was one of the long-pending experiences that had to be ticked off. 😉

We stayed at this hotel which we found last minute on booking.com. The hotel is run by a lovely couple. It is 10Kms away from the city, if you have your own transport it makes sense to stay here else prefer staying somewhere near the old town.

Sharing some interesting facts about this village –

  • The houses in this beautiful town are called Trulli (plural ) and Trullo ( Singular )
  • The Trulli houses are made of limestone boulders without mortar and they are embellished with conical roofs.
  • Symbols on Trulli have religious and spiritual importance and have different meanings.
  • They were initially built for peasant workers.
  • The whole idea was to build a house that can be easily dismantled. This was an ingenious way to avoid property taxes because if the houses looked unstable and temporary they were not taxable.
  • This town became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
  • The famous Monti Quarter is one of the most extensive Trulli neighborhood of all, where an estimated 1,030 of them still exist today.
