Are you one of the unfortunate travelers whose plans have been thrown into disarray due to a strike by the staff of a particular airline? Airport strikes can be the unwelcome disruptors of even the most meticulously planned travel itineraries. The sudden halt caused due to strikes by airline staff for pay hikes can throw your plans into disarray. In this guide, we’ll delve into your rights as a passenger affected by recent Lufthansa strikes and outline the steps to claim the compensation you’re entitled to from Lufthansa.
Your Rights as a Passenger
As a passenger affected by the recent Lufthansa strike, knowing your rights is essential, especially regarding compensation. European Union Regulation 261/2004 lays down rules concerning compensation and assistance to passengers in the event of denied boarding, flight cancellations, or long delays.

Flight Compensation from Lufthansa
Lufthansa, being a major international airline, is subject to these regulations. If your flight with Lufthansa is canceled or significantly delayed due to a strike, you may be entitled to compensation. The exact amount of compensation depends on various factors, including the distance of your flight and the length of the delay.

How to Claim Compensation
Here’s what you should do to claim compensation from Lufthansa:
- Document Everything: Keep all your travel documents, including your booking confirmation, boarding pass, and any communication from Lufthansa regarding the disruption.
- Contact Lufthansa: Reach out to Lufthansa Customer Service. They will provide information on your options and assist you in rebooking your flight or offering alternative arrangements.
- Know Your Rights: Familiarize yourself with EU Regulation 261/2004 and understand the compensation you’re entitled to based on the circumstances of your flight disruption.
- Submit a Claim: If you believe you’re eligible for compensation, submit a claim to Lufthansa. You can typically do this through their website or customer service channels. Provide all necessary documentation to support your claim.
- Follow Up: If you don’t receive a response from Lufthansa within a reasonable timeframe or if your claim is denied unjustly, don’t hesitate to follow up. Persistence can sometimes be key in resolving these matters. It worked for us.
We were initially denied compensation when we submitted our claim and they informed us via email that we were not entitled to compensation. In response to the email, we shared all the relevant screenshots from the Lufthansa passenger rights page and the court ruling PDF documents with customer service. They reviewed our case internally and replied to our email with a link to share our bank account details for reimbursement. We received 600 Euros per person for our cancelled flight. Food expense at the airport was reimbursed too.
